About

At Hornbill, we will provide the practical advice and support you need to ensure that your hazardous area installations comply fully with the entire regulatory framework - at all times.

We offer DSEAR compliance reporting, which includes a detailed visual inspection with the option of an inspection and asset database. We also carry out initial ATEX Inspection and Testing (BS EN 60079-17). This covers the design of your electrical installations within hazardous areas and sets out any necessary remedial work.

Should any gaps exist between the condition of your installations and the regulatory requirements, Hornbill will explain these to you and create a plan to address the weaknesses.

To help you stay compliant thereafter, Hornbill can provide ongoing hazardous area maintenance and inspection and testing services.

Our compliance services cover the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmosphere Regulations (DSEAR), Electricity at Work Regulations (EAWR) and BS 7671 Electrical Inspection and Testing.

DSEAR (Dangerous Substances and Explosives Atmospheres Regulations) oblige employers to eliminate or control the risks from explosive atmospheres in the workplace. In DSEAR, an explosive atmosphere is a mixture of dangerous substances with air, under atmospheric conditions, in the form of gases, vapours, mist or dust in which, after ignition has occurred, combustion spreads to the entire unburned mixture.

ATEX refers to the two European Directives for controlling explosive atmospheres:

  1. Directive 99/92/EC (also known as 'ATEX 137' or the 'ATEX Workplace Directive') on minimum requirements for improving the health and safety protection of workers potentially at risk from explosive atmospheres
  2. Directive 94/9/EC (also known as 'ATEX 95' or 'the ATEX Equipment Directive') on the approximation of the laws of Members States concerning equipment and protective systems intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres
